The World's on Fire, oh wait, It's Just Nike Products
Recently this happened. This advertisement to the left, aired all around the world, showing Colin Kaepernick, with the words, 'Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.' directly in the middle. This advertisement has been in the centre of a lot of media attention. All of this attention range from respect for Nike's movement to use Colin Kaepernick and extreme disapproval of it.
Some of the people who disapprove of Nike's direction with this advertisement, have burned
their Nike products, after they bought it. Essentially these people went out, and payed money to buy Nike products, then proceeded to burn them. In my opinion I believe that this is just an attempt for people to get publicly noticed for their stupidity, they had already paid for their goods, so they were still giving their money to Nike, so essentially by trying to boycott Nike, they paid Nike.
There has been ongoing debate on whether Nike only used Colin Kaepernick to profit, or to stand up to racial injustice. But I believe that at the end of the day, a corporation won't do something unless it results in profit. This doesn't necessarily mean that Nike doesn't care about racial injustice, it just means that it is likely that it wasn't only this injustice that caused them to do this.
Regardless of what happens in the future with Nike in regards with this ad, it won't change my life, not will it really effect it in the slightest. For me what matters is the quality of the products, not who's the face of the company.

I agree that the people destroyed their Nike products for attention because everyone moved on from this situation. It didn't affect Nike negatively because all the backlash was contrasted with support. Nike stocks grew and the company continued its success. I felt the same way about this situation, it didn't affect me at all. Quality of the products also mattered to me more than the face of the company. -Janssen
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely agree that it made little sense for people to burn their a;ready purchased Nike products. At the end of the day the purpose of a business is profit and Nike will be successful regardless of who the face of their brand is.
